June 7, 2025 - Driving to Alaska
Thunder Bay - Dryden, Ontario

Leaving Marathon, we continued driving the Trans-Canada Highway (ON17) along Lake Superior's northern coast to Thunder Bay.   We had a late breakfast at Niva's in Thunder Bay, walked along the shore for some exercise, then continued on.  We left Thunder Bay and Lake Superior, heading northwest through lake country, before arriving at our destination for the night:  Dryden.  We were still in Ontario which we were discovering is a very large province.  Total driving today was almost seven hours.

Here, Lynnette stands in front of Niva's Restaurant where we enjoyed a late breakfast which was excellent.  Good stop.

We found a Lake Superior shoreline park in Thunder Bay and walked around to get some exercise.

Thunder Bay interested me because I had been here before.  When I went to prep school in Mound, Minnesota back in 1976/77, we went on a weekend ski trip to Thunder Bay, Ontario.   The Loch Lomond Ski Area is southwest of Thunder Bay town so I didn't get to see it, however.

The drive to Dryden, Ontario -- still on the Trans-Canada Highway (ON17) was uneventful -- through forest and lake country.

We stayed in the Dryden Hotel - Best Western.

Dryden's biggest and perhaps only attraction is "Max the Moose".    The 18 ft tall statue has been described as the "mascot" of the city. It was built in 1962, out of a metal frame and concrete plaster.

Yay, Max!
